What to have ready
Valid photo ID
Driver's license, state ID, US or foreign passport, or military ID. Not expired, and the name must match the document.
All signers present
Everyone whose signature is being notarized needs to be there in person with their own ID — including any required witnesses.
General notary work vs loan signing
General documents covers most of what people need: powers of attorney, healthcare directives, affidavits, travel consents, title transfers, sworn statements. Usually one to a handful of signatures.
Loan signing / real estate is a specialism. A signing agent walks you through a 100-plus page lender package, knows which pages need notarization, and returns scan-backs to escrow the same day. If you are refinancing, buying or taking a reverse mortgage, filter for it.

No legal advice
A notary cannot tell you which document you need, draft it for you, or explain its legal effect. That is an attorney's job.
No notarizing without the signer
The signer must be present with valid ID. No exceptions, no matter how urgent or how well you know each other.
No incomplete documents
Blank spaces must be filled in or struck through before notarization.
No overcharging
$15 per signature is the California maximum. Travel fees are separate and must be disclosed in advance.
